OK - B Class with Range Extender. I've charged it using that option, reset all values and the max the dash range indicator goes to is 95. Since claimed base range is like 15 and the Extender is supposed to add 15, shouldn't I see 100?!?!

Just sayin'...

Anyone getting more than mid-90's on the dash display?

Cheers

A couple of things.

1. I'm not sure where you got a 15 miles increase figure. The range extended boosts the charge from 28 to 31.5 kWh. That's an increase of about 12.5 percent. That calculates out about perfectly to the 95 mile range mark, if you've reset the consumption gauge.

2. Don't let the GOM concern you too much. I routinely exceed the guess in that meter, sometimes by a large margin. With careful driving, with a range charge (depending upon temperature), you should be able to drive in excess of 100 miles. There are lots of threads here about the inaccuracy of the range GOM (guess-o-meter). The state of charge and miles driven on that amount of charge are much more important in my experience.

There is a reason why they call it a Guess O Meter!

Got it... For some reason, I feel like MB had sales materials that said that the Range extender would give you up to 15 additional miles. From greencarreport.com : Activated by pressing a button on the center console before charging, this feature adds another 15 miles of range.

And I'm pretty sure the MB website says something of that nature.

But then again, as you all say, it's a GOM!

In this NYC (sub-zero temps) winter, the Range mode adds about 7 miles, so I get 76 miles total range instead of 68. I'll take it! Can wait for Spring and Summer....

I just got this car for my wife and here (image below) is what she got for range this week (2nd week of ownership) About 70mi actual range with average speed of 15mph!.

Regardless of the "guess o meter" we still seem to be getting horrible range . . . . We drive in Long Beach California (no heater or AC) just doing school/joga/shopping runs. looks like we can expect less than 70 mi range when on normal freeway mix. Is anyone having this experience? how does yours compare? thanks !

TraderD, your range seems consistent with 15mph average and short runs. People who report max range are typically doing longer runs with higher mph. In cold weather like wtzouris reports, I get 35 mile range but at average only 9mph and 1.2 mkWh. Your experience is also consistent with early weeks of figuring out actual driving use vs. that used for the dealer estimates. Nevertheless, I would expect your range to increase as your wife slows acceleration off the mark and coasts to a stop. Hey, in sunny California with a garage to plug in at night, you should not be suffering much range anxiety much. If it helps, look for charging stations as you stretch your range out further.

Enjoy the Be, it is a great car and fun to drive. Perfect car for short leg trips if you have a nightly charge routine. Think of it as a mobile smartphone.

Hi everyone! For those of you that have the range package, I have a questions.

My wife and I recently got a B class with the range extender and I had a question. When we charge the car normally (without pushing the range plus button) it charges to 100% and 80 miles of range on the range estimator meter. When we push the range plus button before charging and let it charge overnight, it still says 80 miles. When you charge normally (no range charging) what is your estimated mileage and then when you range charge by pushing the button what is your updated range mileage?

Mercedes here doesn't seem to know anything about the range package other than that it is on the car and I've gotten answers ranging from it is an emergency range that only shows up when you hit zero miles and push the button to we don't know.

We won't need the extra range much but we are trying to figure out whether or not it is supposed to add 10-15 miles to the regular range and if that addition shows up on the range guessometer or if somehow the software activating the range package is not working properly. Thanks for the help!

Beau

I've used it a few times and it adds on the order of 10 miles to the range prediction which we know is a guess and moves all over.

One way to confirm it is working is when you do an extended range charge and start your drive the state of charge will sit at 100% for something like 10 miles before it moves down to 99%. If that isn't happening it isn't range charging properly.

With a strong level 2 charger the extended range takes an extra 30 min of charge time over the standard charge.

To test further, do a standard charge. When it is done and the charging stops get in the car and push the extend button and the light on the button will come on. You should hear the normal clicks, pumps, or fans start running as it starts charging again.

I wonder if I am running a new software or something compared to you guys. I got my car two weeks ago and here is what I came up with as of last night when I did a full regular charge if if you take in to account some information I've seen on the forums about multiplying by 1.2

Last night regular charge, this morning results.
70 miles range, 100%

The night before.
81 miles range, 100%

Multiplied out you roughly get a range of 85 and 97 miles, for standard and range charge, which would be about right. Also, my wife's commute is 32 miles and according to the car she uses about 25 miles of range, which X 1.2 is about 32ish miles. Our car has never shown more than 81 miles on the range meter.

I find it interesting that Mercedes may have calibrated this off by that factor of 1.2. Anyone know where that number came from? Was it owners like us or is there something official on that?

What is the maximum range you have seen on your range meter when fully charged, and if you could, list whether or not you have the range package. I'm trying to figure out if this is a new software thing with the 1.2 conversion or something they need to address for the sake of accuracy.

2014, no RM, drive in cold urban stop and go environment. For GOM, after unplugging, I reset and never recall seeing higher than 78. Actual performance varied from 35 miles in the dead of winter in urban stop and go to over 80 on recent highway excursion and back.

For the GOM to mean anything, you must reset all the economy data on the center dash. Use the up and down buttons on the steering wheel.

When you reset everything, the GOM will read (plus or minus a mile or two):

100% "extended" charge - 94 miles
80% "normal" charge - 87 miles

NOTE: YOU MUST RESET THE METER TO GET THESE VALUES

When the battery is cold, the GOM will be significantly less. Also, in the future when battery degradation becomes noticeable, the values should be somewhat less.

Thank you Tony. That makes sense. I will give it a try.

Tony, that explains why I am getting less even though I reset as you suggested. I park outside and it still goes to 30s at night so battery is cold when I remove charger. Will compare to when I unplug from dealer charger where it is 68 degrees all the time.

Is there a point when it is best to reset everything such as right before charging in the evening? By economy data are we talking the 3 bar graph showing acceleration and braking or are we talkin trip data or both? Thanks everyone!

Resetting the page that says "from reset" is the one that immediatly bumps the GOM up. But drive a few miles in cold temps or stop and go traffic and it drops right back down again. Last weekend we had a wamer day and I actially saw the reverse, the GOM came up 5 miles as I drove. It was warm and I shut off the climate control completely that day.

As I understand it the correction factor we talk about here is that Benz calibrated the miles per Kw Hour (the electric equivalent of MPG) from the wall, not the battery. It calculates from the wall to incorporate the power pulled from the wall that is consumed (and paid) but lost in the charging process. The wall power is AC, the battery is DC and there is a loss in the onboard chargers AC to DC conversion.

In short they've calibrated that miles per KWH meter so you can calculate your actual operating cost. At least that is the way I view it.

The miles per kWh "correction" is silly. What is my actual electrcity cost when I use public charging? Or a mix of public and home charging? Or charging (for free) at work?

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

We aren't all lucky enough for public or workplace charging to cover the cost. I just got my first full month electric bill today since leasing the car. I'll review it more carefully but at a glance the car has added $60 easily to the monthly bill.

Folks, New owner of ED in Southern Cal.

For few days I am observing that it charges 100% for 60 miles only. Is that normal?

Thanks for your input.
